Colour Shade Chart

Indigo can be used to stain paper, textiles, leather, hair and skin. When describing the action of indigo it is useful to understand the range of possibilities that this dye can produce. The chart below provides a starting point for understanding the range of shades and colour variations that occurs when working with a simple dye protocol to achieve a blue stain. Due to the limitations of digital displays the colours you are viewing may be distorted and thus the chart can be used only as a rough guide, rather than as an exhaustive tool. The shades shown can be exploited to create multi-tone artwork or to understand the limitations of a dye batch.

A dark blue can be built up using several Indigo dye applications to deepen the colour.

An indigo stain in skin sits in the keratinised surface layers of dead skin. The Body Map below illustrates the tone it is possible to achieve for different points on the body. See the technique pages for detailed instructions. The depth of tone it is possible to achieve on the body is determined by the thickness of superficial dead skin. The skin of the palm of the hand and sole of the foot have a great depth of keratinised skin cells this means that in these areas indigo can give a very dark stain right up to F6 on the colour chart.
