Indigo on Skin

~ Application 1. Indigo On

The design is painted on using the indigo mini-vat. Refer to the mixing guide here The indigo is allowed to dry on the skin to a maximum contact time of one minute, the dye is then rinsed off with water. This application leaves a light stain on the skin, which is used as a guide for subsequent applications.

The design is now refined with further applications using the pale blue marks as a guide. The darker lines in this picture show the second application of dye, the indigo clearly contrasts against the pale stain underneath.

To show the effect of multiple application only part of the design is being worked up to deep colour. Note the pale stain left by the first and second application.

~ Application 3. Indigo OFF

Here it can be clearly seen that three applications on the palm of the hand have given a deep blue-black stain on the thickest skin of the palm. The stain weakens up the finger as the skin changes texture and likewise down into the centre of the palm as the skin thins.

~ Application 4. Indigo OFF

The final stage, shown here with the dye washed off. This would provide adequate depth of tone for a complete finished design. The partial design allows you to see the development of the stain throughout the multiple application stages of the technique.
